Is Tiger Woods done?
The executives at Nike surely didn't see this coming. Jim Leyritz made this same mistake in Florida, fortunately for Woods it didn't end with the same catastrophic results. Nassim Taleb has written extensively about not being fooled by randomness in the universe, but one can't help but wonder at least causally, what the hell has been going on with Tiger Woods and is this latest Dui a sign?
Since the shot heard round the world, not that one, I'm referring to the one from November 27, 2009 when Woods' then wife showed him she can swing a club with as much force as he, Tiger Woods has been on a decline that seemed to be faster than his meteoric rise in golf. Up until that point it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the wunderkind from Stanford would pass Jack Nicklaus' record of eighteen golf major championships. Most would've projected that at this point Woods would've had somewhere in the neighborhood of at least twenty majors under his belt, as it stands he's been stuck at fourteen for 9 years and with each passing season it appears more and more doubtful he can recapture that magic. Not only has he not won a major since his Escalade took a beating, he's fallen off the face of the PGA map.
Since his last major win in 2008, Woods has lost his wife, his swing, his intimidation, his physical health, his mental strength, and his discipline. Trying to connect the dots to all of these is more corollary than causal, but is it possible they are related? Could he have been a high achiever capable of doing so only while operating out of some sort of dysfunction as a cover? How much has losing his father played a role in all this? At 41 years he still has potentially a lot of golf left in him, but at this point that would appear meaningless unless he can get his 'golf bags' in order. Hopefully he can do that for the sake of his family and his own well being.
