Will Apple learn from Sony?

If you're old enough to remember a time when cell phones werent the norm, you will recall that a certain Japanese electronics company was the indisputable king of electronics and technology. I'm of course talking about Sony. Psychologists say that our brains are hard wired for pattern recognition which explains why we tend to see things that aren't really there just so we can put our minds at ease and make sense of something otherwise unexplainable to us, perhaps that is what I am doing now but I can not help but see some similar patterns developing between Apple and Sony.

From Walkmans to cd Walkmans to DVDs to the PlayStation, all while dominating the television market, Sony was untouchable. When they revealed the PlayStation they were slammed by critics for overstepping their bounds but in no time they made Sega gaming consoles extinct. After the PlayStation they seemed to slow down on innovating and with technology evolving faster and faster everyday, if you're not on the cutting edge you will be left in the dust in no time. Sony and Microsoft, both titans of industry were too late when Apple turned the corner with the iPod and iTunes.

I've been using Apple computers since Karateka. That was a game I played on the IIc. From the Macintosh to the Performa to the fruity colored iMacs to the clamshell iBooks to the G3 PowerBooks, (those were awesome machines) I used to defend Apple against Windows proponents as if I had stock in the company.

Suddenly mp3's exploded on the scene and the iPod was released. If you recall the iPod had a luke warm response because iTunes was only able to be used on a Mac which meant one had to buy a Mac in order to use the iPod and even back then Macs were wildy expensive. Then iTunes was made available for Windows OS and as Malcolm Gladwell would say, the tipping point well, tipped.

Fast forward to today, can anyone say that Apple has blown us away with anything innovative since the original IPad? Apple TV is a scud missile and I don't know a single person with an iwatch that didn't receive it as a gift. I know Apple is dominating the smart phone market and has more cash than the US Treasury, but I can't help but wonder what they are doing behind the scenes to push the envelope. Google, Amazon, Microsoft and even Facebook are rumored to have their technological tenacles in so many diverse areas that they seem to be claiming future pie slices before it is even baked. There will come a point in the not so distant future where technology will again turn a fast curve and the smartphone as we know it today will be obsolete. Only time will tell if all that cash Apple has will help them stop the iPhone from following the Trinitron.
