Do players make the coach or is it the other way around
His Airness, KB8 ( or 24 if you prefer), and Shaq have fifteen championship rings among them. Ok there is an overlap of 3 with Shaq and Kobe but few would argue they were the among the best players, if not the best, amongst their generation. They also have the NBA coach with the most rings in common and would have appeared to have done for Phil what LeBron has done for Spoelstra and Lue. Since Phil Jackson came to the New York Knicks some wondered if if he would tarnish his legacy by coming to the dysfunction that is the Dolan MSG and there seems to be an argument developing that at least a part of his legacy can be brought into question.
What is it that makes a great NBA coach? The proverbial talk about championships rings is the popular consensus for most. Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich have like what 20 rings among them? No argument about their coaching prowess. On the other hand, Erik Spoelstra, Tyronn Lue, and Steve Kerr have more rings than Jerry Sloan, George Karl, Don Nelson, Rick Adelman, do I need to continue?
Basketball is without a doubt the sport where one superstar can have the largest impact in the win/loss column. It's too complicated of a debate to get into great coaches being great only because of the players they had but it does make interesting water cooler banter. Most people knew Phil Jackson was walking into a psychologists dream when he decided to join the long list of Dolan debacles and our situations have a huge impact our behavior. Maybe this explains why he drafted a player ( Frank Ntilikina )who is rated lower by just about everyone than the two he passed on (Malik Monk and Dennis Smith) on the heels of reports he was looking to shop KP all after he publicly suggested his biggest star, that he gave a huge contract to, should be on another team. He is hellbent on establishing the triangle at all costs appearing more interested in being right than winning. Phil's legacy as a coach more than likely is safe and only time will tell if he can pull off what hasn't been done in 45 years but how much time does he have left before Dolan turns the Zen Master into sushi?
