Our Brains tendency to prejudge

Humans are social animals and it has been our practice for thousands of years join circles where we most identify with the majority. We tend to favor things that we know and are familiar with. Psychologists refer to this as the mere exposure effect.

The power of the mere exposure effect is that most of us are completely unaware that this process is happening. Our subconscious controls most of this action.The sense of familiarity we tend to gravitate towards doesn't have to come from something or someone we've seen before. Politicians try to play o this every time they are up for election.

Our brains have a natural, and for good reason, tendency to automatically categorize just about everything we see and experience. It's a product of evolution. It enables us to recognize things in an efficient manner and this comes in handy more often than not. Unfortunately this is the reason prejudice exists and why it is such a hard thing to change in people. People naturally prejudge people, just like everything else, so essentially in order to prevent prejudice towards people we are working against a function that has been ingrained in our brains.

A good start is simply being aware of this fact and working from there. Our minds are incredibly malleable we can grow in ways many are not aware of. Two elements we need to move in this direction are the knowledge that we can grow and the desire to actually grow.
