Rise of the Machines. Excited or worried?
Ever since HAL took over the spaceship in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, we have been subjected to today's fiction becoming tomorrow's reality. Everything that exists today in our world of tech was something we were no doubt subjected to in a film prior to it coming into existence. Frightening considering all the problems machines are portrayed to be causing in films like The Terminator and The Matrix.
Ray Kurzweil and Yuval Noah Harari have gone so far as to predict when, around 2049, we will have no choice but to supplement our brains with computer chips simply to keep up with the world of Artificial Intelligence. If that seems too far out to comprehend, know that there are companies that have been working on developing this technology and capability for years now.
Whether this is something that excites you or worries you the reality is that it is coming and like Peter Diamandis likes to say, "It will hit like a tsunami." The smartphone as we know it has only been in heavy use for around for ten years and look at how fast apps and other mobile functions have already taken over our lives. The next chapter will prove to be more mind blowing when the Internet of Things and Smart Machines become a reality. The only thing holding back this explosion right now is the bandwidth capability we currently have. The speed 4G LTE provides is insufficient for the next wave on the technological frontier. Once the consensus on the operation of 5G is established it will be like we are on the Starship Enterprise and Kirk gives the command, "Warp speed Scotty!"
