Why Everyone Should Write

Writing for me was always that annoying thing we had to do in language arts class. From elementary school all the way through college writing in some form was always required and it was something most people would liken to Chinese water torture. Word counts, page counts all being monitored to hit that number to know when we could stop. With literacy as we once knew it seemingly becoming an endangered species now is the best time to unveil the power writing can unleash in all of us.

There is science that supports the benefits of writing, particularly handwriting, on a regular basis. The transference of thought from pen to paper accomplishes a few things. Writing down our thoughts or ideas produces a concrete record of which we can always refer at a later time. Writing clears our short term memory bank and as it is written reinforces the item in our long term memory bank resulting in our actual learning of it. Emptying our short memory bank calms our mind enabling us to think more clearly and make better decisions. In this day and age of data and stimulus overload we all need this more than we realize. This process also reduces stress and anxiety. It enhances our ability to focus and increases our emotional self awareness which in turn increases our emotional awareness of others. When we come across a word we are unfamiliar with, writing it down enhances our probability of learning the word and writing a sentence using the word will enhance the probability that we will use it in speech.

If as a student for so many years I was told that writing will make you smarter and happier I may have paid more attention and put more effort into writing. Illustrating that it is never too late to begin something new, I have taken on writing as a multi faceted endeavor. You don't have to write to with any real intentions whatsoever, as long as you do it regularly you will start to feel better and move in a positive direction of growth which will improve your life and the lives of those around you.
