Embrace Fear to Take on Challenges

Fear is something we are all familiar with. It is primal and has served us well and still has its place in our lives today. The flip side is that too many of us are prisoners to it and it is largely responsible for holding us back from being the best versions of ourselves we can be.

Few people know fear as well as I do and I'm not referencing it in a Scooby Do way. Over the past year or so I have learned how my own personal subconscious fears have thwarted my own ways of thinking and have served as an obstacle to moving towards taking on challenges in my life. A quote from Brazilian poet Paulo Coelho says it best, "If you think adventure is dangerous try routine, it is lethal." Fear has served us well over the years and is necessary to alert us to take action when faced with danger. But it can also hold us back for reasons that are in fact totally irrational. Facing this irrationality has helped me push towards attempting things I would have been afraid to do in the past. The key factor for us to grow and break circles and routines is to manage whatever fears we have. Whether it is a fear of failing, fear of not being good enough, a fear of success, a fear of the unknown, these aren't the same fears as being chased as a bear but they impact us just the same.

Coming face to face with what holds us back from doing anything is the first step in liberating ourselves from it. Few things feel more satisfying than knowing that you are on your way to doing what you what when you know you have faced down your fears and moved past them. Fear will always be there lurking in the shadows but when we learn to simply wave at them while turning on the light we will empower ourselves to be able to accomplish extraordinary things.
