Engagement Party

Hearing the word engagement brings to mind a notion of that state prior to a marriage or wedding for most. It is the other engagement I wish to elaborate on. Some probably aren't even aware of its other meaning and it is for that reason I decided to use this as my topic today.

The statistics today that are available about our overall level of contentment in our lives are overwhelming and not in a positive way. Close to seventy of the population are unhappy in their jobs or careers and an average of fifty percent of all marriages end in divorce. More specifically approximately forty-three percent of first marriages, sixty-five percent of second marriages, and just over seventy percent of third marriages end in divorce. We are obviously searching for something in our lives and not finding it. I believe at least one of those components is engagement. Engagement makes us feel like we are working towards something bigger than ourselves. It makes us feel like we are a part of something and could be contributing to a larger cause. Engagement is also a mindset that can become a habit. An old martial arts saying goes, " A true master of an art reveals it in their every action." We can seek out engagement in most things we do. In our daily activities, our relationships, in our goals if we focus on it and work to block out the noise. That noise is many different things for many of us.

Technology engages us today but in a fast food sort of way. It is very short lived because there is no real connection to others via the medium. Maybe if we can minimize texting and emailing and have more conversations that would help. The more we rely on digital communication the less emotion is conveyed and the harder it is for that connection and engagement to occur. This mindfulness can carry over to every aspect of our lives and only enhance how we interact with the world and engage with life and others. As with everything else in life is if something is done often enough it becomes a habit. If we work towards creating engagement often enough it too will become a habit.
