How many cultures do you have?

When we hear the word culture we most often associate it with ethnicity and for good reason. Our ethnic culture is a powerful driving force in many of us. It is who we are and how we define ourselves. It can also blind us to some things because of our ethnocentric nature. This doesn't to only apply to our ethnic cultural identity, it applies to every culture we are a part of and practice.

The cultures we are a part of play significant roles in our lives. Some we are aware of and many we are not. Businesses have cultures, sports teams have cultures, social media platforms have cultures, we are surrounded by different cultures all day. They determine how we think, how we feel about things and our behavior. Few things are more valuable than traveling for this reason. Simply being able to observe that people have different ways of thinking and doing things opens our minds and helps us to adopt the mindset of being open to seeing things in a different light.

Our cultures are also usually the biggest obstacles many of us face when trying to institute change in our lives. Some cultures promote growth and change and others fear it. Only by becoming aware of these things can we modify and grow. Thinking or doing something different is not abandoning culture, incorporating aspects of another culture into your own is simply growing your own culture.
