The Reality of Realities
The Reality of Realities
Keeping it real. This is often heard by those trying to validate a position or perspective they hold on a given topic. But what is real? Is reality empirical or a wholly subjective matter?
A law of quantum mechanics states that a particle becomes visible only when observed.
An even more intriguing part of this same law is that the particle movement is in accordance with where the observer sees it going. These are accepted in the scientific community as the most fundamental laws of the universe.
Energy is neither created or destroyed, it only can be released and transform. The universe is a closed loop with a fixed amount of energy. From a scientific perspective reality is nothing more than energy and matter and our brains interpretation of this creates our reality. Let's get to our brains.
Our experiences with our environments seems pretty visceral. But are they? Every sensory experience we have is created by the brain. This explains why what looks good, smells good, feels good, tastes good, and sounds good is subjective to each person, culture, etc. The fact is we create our own realities down to the most rudimentary of our sensory experiences. This includes our emotions and feelings.
Even within the confines of cultural and institutional practices no two people have the same realities. Everyplace we have been and every experience we have had impacts what our brain predicts will come next. This is the foundation of what is self fulfilling in our thinking and behavior. Our brains constantly predict what our realities will be and when our senses don't match up to that prediction we have what is referred to as prediction error. This is when we get startled, shocked, surprised, or hurt.
The good news is that because our brains all have a property called neuroplasticity, we can effectively change what our brains predict and consciously create the realities we want. Tools like habits and mindsets play to effect the changes in our thinking and behavior we want. Mindfully we can create the environments, situations, and experiences we know will create inertia into the direction we want to travel creating the realities where we are the best versions of ourselves we can be.
