Creating Space to Close the Gap

We all have a tendency to think we know more than what we do. Experts are more guilty of this than most because they tend to not know what they don't know. Our self perceptions are important because they tend to project where we go or whether we believe we can go in a direction. Calibration gaps, these spaces that represent where we actually are in relation to our ideal self, vary greatly among us from the size of a pothole to Mount Everest. Only by increasing what we know will we be able to increase doing the best that we can.

People do the best they can with what they know. Many of us don't consciously work to increase what we know, thus that circle never grows meaning the best we can do stays stagnant as well. Speed is our enemy in this endeavor. Only by slowing down (our thinking, our reactions, our responses) can we work to improve and expand what we know. It is in this space of moderate movement that we can acknowledge that there are in fact many things we need to learn. Slowing things down creates space and allows us to improve our thinking. Paradoxically I find that the more I learn the less I know which thus propels me to want to know more.

Knowledge can be acquired in many ways. Reading books is an excellent starting point. Reading books increases gray brain matter enhancing communication within the brain, reading builds focus and attention which comes into play when directing and managing our thinking. Being able to change how we think is a superpower. Our ability to reframe and change context changes how we feel which changes our behavior which changes our habits and experiences. Changing our experiences does two things, it creates new habits and mindsets and it can create positive memories which projects positive future experiences.

I thought I knew more than I did and this mindset held me back from learning a great many things. Conversely acknowledging that I do not know what I don't know ignited in me a constant desire to learn. Our gaps will never disappear but we can consciously work to shrink them and in the process become aware of what we don't know.
