Why It's So Hard To Change How We Think

The subconscious is powerful, much more so than the conscious mind. The latest estimates have it that our subconscious is capable of processing somewhere around eleven million bits of information per second while our conscious mind can process about fifty pieces of information per second. The one advantage our conscious mind has is its concentrated ability to run an override and to form the goal, or plan, because the subconscious can only carry out action but not plan an action. This brings us to our thinking.

We all know what thinking is. We all do it. How often have you stopped to wonder how and why you think the way you do about things? Have you asked yourself why you think the way you do about things? Have you consciously tried to change how you think?

We can all attest to the fact that we can in fact change how we think. Many of us have done so but haven't done it consciously. It usually happens after an experience, good or bad, that impacts us in a way that changes our perspective on something. What we may not be aware of is that we are all capable of consciously changing how we think and in this there is a real superpower.

Books, movies, television shows, our social circles all have the power to influence and change our thinking. We may not realize or even acknowledge it but they do. No single thought we have is originally our own. Something somewhere we experienced contributed to it. Those who have harnessed the ability to focus this action are those we admire and make very wealthy. Those like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Elon Musk, and all the other creative artists and entrepreneurs that benefit off of their ability to manage how they think.

For many of us, it seems impossible to change how we think because we are already starting with an improper thought template. For starters if you lack the belief that you can consciously change how you think, you never will. Most of what and who we are is in fact self fulfilling so what you believe will greatly impact your decisions, choices, and your life's trajectory.

If you have the belief that you can in fact change the way you think to change the decisions you make but are unsuccessful in doing so, more than likely you may not believe you deserve the changes or improvements you want to make. This would be an incredibly powerful admission. Why wouldn't someone believe they deserve improvements? This would be different for everyone but the answer is that we all deserve to be the best versions of the people we can be and it is ultimately up to each individual to figure this out and address this themselves if that is the case.

Changing how we think is not easy but if we believe it is possible and we have the mindset we deserve what comes with changing how we think, the process is no different than getting better at any other things. Committing to putting the time in to collect novel experiences and being open to exploring some things we don't know, reading books on subjects that interest us, building mastery of a craft or skill, enhancing our creative abilities and expression of emotions all play into cultivating a new culture of changing how we think which ultimately changes how we feel which changes what we do and become. Other factors like habit of thought and culture are obstacles that play an influential role into out thinking as well but if we have the proper mindset and motivation, changing how we think can be the most fulfilling and liberating experience any of us can have.
