Choose To Be Great

Choose To Be Great

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit."
-Aristotle

I recently engaged in a debate that surprisingly became somewhat heated. The debate was regarding the importance of talent in the spectrum of achievement. What is innate versus what can be produced. Some people don't want to hear that they can achieve what they want if they just worked at it.

In probably one of the most extreme 'experiments' on this issue, a Hungarian educational psychologist named Lazlo Polgar decided to create a Chess grandmaster. In a discipline that most believed one must be born with talent to excel at, he raised three daughters who would go on to become chess grandmasters one of whom is the youngest ever. He was an average player himself.

In just about every measurable metric it has been proven that greatness is achieved and not something we are born with. Physical limitations notwithstanding, because we can't choose our physical size or proportions which play to being to being to produce in various sports, everything else is fair game.

If you want to become great at something, choose that thing and work on getting better at that thing like your life depends on it. We crave mastery. Love what that thing is. Make it your purpose and your passion. Know that each and every day you work to improve you are in fact improving. Everything is difficult before it is easy. What every person who has achieved greatness in something have in common is they never quit. Consistency is the key. When you commit to the process, achievement inevitably follows. Choose to be great. We all have infinite potential.
