The Self Worth Dilemma

The Self Worth Dilemma

Humans have always struggled for relevance. In some way shape or form we sought to prove our worth. Whether in the political, economic or social spectrum we have had a desire to be validated. We still do.

Historically we have always had a medium to use to provide this for us. Sometimes it came in the form of a career, a relationship, or a combination of more than a few relevant things. Over time no one has been paying attention to how technology is actually making people lose their feeling of relevance in the traditional sense. Jobs were first outsourced and will eventually be replaced by machines. People no longer read or develop their minds because they feel like Wikipedia and Google can do that for them. When we don't feel relevant we lose our sense of self worth and this leads to exerting our sense of power and control wherever we feel we can, unproductively in relationships, at work, on social media you name it. This can manifest itself in many ugly and unproductive ways.

What very few people know is that the key to weather this tsunami of technology that is on the horizon that will amplify these feelings is to create your own self worth. People need to look within themselves and not extrinsically for this. And one of the best ways to accomplish this is to build mastery. We all have passions whether realized or not. It is time for society to dig in and do the things necessary to develop their expertise. There is too much knowledge, information and opportunity circulating to not do so.

The problem we face is our mindset. Technology has made us want everything yesterday. This impacts our work ethic and creates entitlement. Denzel Washington once said, "Ease is a bigger threat to success than hardship ever will be." Most of us simply have had it too easy or currently have it too easy. The only way to mastery is consistency over the long term and this is something that repels most people from doing so. If you want to stay relevant in the face of irrelevance, create value for yourself and chase your passion.
