Why Aren't You Doing More
Why Aren't You Doing More?
It seems the more I ask the more puzzled people get. Why aren't you doing more? In a day and age where more people live for two days (the weekend) and dread the five days leading up to it (especially Mondays) it seems like a relevant question.
There was a time when the working adult had no more than one hour to themselves per day. These days people average about four to six hours a day watching television and spend about three to four hours a day on their mobile devices yet complaining about things is at an all time high. We all have the time so why aren't people doing more with themselves particularly to change their situation or to create more engaging activities?
It turns out it isn't a complicated answer. We are wired for comfort. The brain seeks out comfort and insures this process by creating the habits we use. Comfort is not synonymous with good or healthy. We can have a comfort zone that is completely destructive to our well being. Look no further than the statistics surrounding obesity and cardiovascular disease. We have bad habits that's why we aren't doing more. The other component is that many of us don't believe we are capable of more and that is where change needs to materialize first, in the mindset.
Why people don't believe they are capable is multi-tiered and is going to be different for everyone. Some things that overlap is that people may not believe they deserve it or that they are even capable. You do, and you are. Science proves the latter and the former is just a product of your conditioning.
We are all capable of more than we are doing. This applies to anything you choose to apply it to. We all have infinite room for improvement and growth wherever we want to apply it to. The question is where do you start? I would suggest to start with that one thing you have always wanted but have been afraid to do. Once you accomplish overcoming that fear you will then have a confidence and belief that you can do anything and ultimately this is the space we all need to occupy.
