Asking Yourself Why

When was the last time you questioned your beliefs? Have you ever even done so? When was the last time you wondered why you think the way you do? Why you see things the way you do? Few of us ask ourselves these types of questions simply because we were never taught to. It seems counterintuitive to do so if you're not conditioned to do this. But asking ourselves these types of questions produces a state that serves as a catalyst for growth and change we would not otherwise be capable of. These questions create mindfulness.

To be mindful requires us to slow things down. To slow down our thinking, our feelings, our reactions and responses. If you are in an environment that prioritizes speed, it requires more conscious effort to slow things down. Even the most sophisticated high performance cars have an ideal threshold with which they can maneuver turns at speed before they lose adhesion. This holds true for our minds and behavior change as well. If we attempt to change lanes too fast, this can easily result in loss of control.

Changing thought and behavioral lanes is best done slowly and gradually. We are allowed to question our own thoughts and beliefs and we are allowed to question the beliefs and thoughts of others. This is how change is produced. We have more choices than we are aware of and our beliefs and mindsets are included in that.

If you take a few steps back to reflect, there are more than a few examples of you changing your belief and mindset on something that you were probably unaware of as it happened illustrating the possibility and its impact. We change what and how we eat. We change our exercise routines or simply start one. We decide we no longer like or dislike a certain something. These are usually preceded by a subconscious belief shift. Little by little by practicing mindfulness we can consciously alter our beliefs and mindsets to aid us in creating desired changes we want in our lives.
