What is Your Story?

The story of who you are is a compelling one for us all. Films have been made and novels have been written all about the search for self. Whether we are conscious of it or not, we all have a story. An unwritten script that we all follow from which our lives are patterned after. From this narrative comes our beliefs about everything that eventually become our realities. So what is your story? And are you writing it?

From the time we are born until about the age of seven we are cognitive sponges. We are effectively absorbing anything and everything around us. People, places, things, emotions feelings, how to be socially, how not to be socially, what to expect from ourselves, what to expect from others, what to expect from our culture, our society, there are an infinite amount of things we are subconsciously learning. One of these things we are learning is our story, our narrative. This is not a story we write, it is a story we are told that we come to believe. After the age of seven we then start to live by this narrative and work subconsciously to create everything we were taught is our story. It is more common for people to go through their entire lives never realizing how the predictive and creative function of the brain and the mind operates leading most to live their lives according to a story they haven't written themselves.

Once you understand this about yourself you have a choice. You can continue along this script or rewrite your own story. You can change you narrative. This is far from easy but closer to possible than you may think. What we believe is stronger than what we know so it is necessary to first believe this is possible. Reprogramming your subconscious is not an overnight endeavor. There is no app that makes this easy to do.

Your journey starts with unlearning the things you want to change and learning the things you want to create for yourself. You can not makes changes to who you are while holding onto things about yourself you need to get rid of. First start with you whom you want to be, then start working on thinking, feeling, and behaving like that person. If you want to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle, you need to start thinking like, feeling like, and behaving like an this person. Create routines and habits that this type of person would be doing. Little by little as you register progress it will be easier for you to accept and continue he this growth. This is exactly what I did when I decided to take myself seriously as a writer. Work to create habits that will serve your future self. Your current self will resist but this is the self you are looking to leave behind, it's just that simple. Understand that this is a long term process you must commit to. Change your standards, raise your standards of self.

We are living in a time where people as a whole seem to more unengaged in their lives than ever before. Maybe it's time to engage with yourself and start treating yourself like the treasure that you are so you can stop relying on external factors like other people, your career, social media for a validation of your self worth. Create core value for yourself, you are worth it.
