Decisions and Behaviors

On an individual level why we think the way we do and why we do the things we do are as much a mystery to the hardest working minds as they have ever been. Advancements in technology and extensive studies have given us more insight into our unseen processes but still leave more questions than answers. One thing remains constant. We still have very few explanations that explain why we think the way we do and why we do the things we do.

Our brains are hard wired for pattern recognition. We don't like the feeling of randomness to the point that we make us narratives for things we have done after the fact to convince ourselves we know why we do the things we do. It's called the narrative fallacy. The truth is so many things operate below our level of awareness it is somewhat scary. People tend to have absolutely no clue why they find a particular person attractive but if you ask them they will most certainly fire off a checklist as to their why. Ninety-five percent of the time we operate off of our adaptive unconscious processes which means an overwhelming majority of our days are spent on automated processes.

When one zooms out of the telephoto lens and looks at the aggregate a different picture develops. There are pull forces that operate invisibly that affect us all. Environments and situations that play to our hard wired operations for comfort pull on us, unseen social influences greatly play on our wired need for social acceptance. Granted there are no certainties in life but there are probabilities and we can in fact increase our probabilities of making certain types of decisions and creating certain types of behaviors by becoming aware of our situations and our social influences.

Our consciousness pales in comparison to power of the subconscious but it has two distinct powers. One is an ability to override the subconscious in select moments and the other is to create the goal. She looking to improve decisions and behaviors set goals accordingly and know that a part of the goal has to incorporate engineering your environments and social influences for the desired decisions and behaviors. Take advantage of these powerful processes and you will be on your way to making the changes you want in your life.
