The Push and Pull Forces of Behavior
There are two forces constantly at work that influence our behaviors. They work in conjunction with one another and only by becoming mindful of them can we utilize these forces to work for us instead of mindlessly being guided by them and leaving our direction and destination to randomness.
The Pull Force
Situations have incredible power over the direction of our behavior. If you do not believe this to be so then you are one of the very individuals on this planet that doesn't have a single bad habit. Because bad habits, or behaviors we wish we could stop, are the perfect examples of pull forces working on our behavior. Pull forces are powered by our subconscious processes. They are extremely powerful hence the difficulty many of us have eliminating our bad habits.
Pull forces pull out our behaviors by activating responses to situational cues. It is the secret sauce to achievement. By consciously engineering our environments and situations to pull behavior out of us we are powered to move in a desired direction to achieve. It's a foundational element in habit creation. Doing the same thing in the same place at the same time works to this effect.
The Push Force
The push force is the grit, the resilience, the effort and the work. It's that space where you are consciously trying to push through an obstacle right in front of you. It is the willpower, the disciplines and the ability to delay gratification. The push force is where your commitment resides and your commitment is key to pushing through barriers of self doubt and fear or whatever is in your way in any given moment or t me. The push force is getting those two more reps at the gym when the body fails before the mind does. This same approach works towards cognitive achievements. The push force is the conscious effort to create a habit. It is where pull forces have their start before they actually become pull forces.
Whenever people speak about getting things done we get hyped especially if they are an amazing speaker. We leave saying to ourselves I'm doing this. But emotion and feelings do not last. These are not static things. They fluctuate. Commitments and habits do not waver. When we use both our push and pull forces to achieve our goals and directions in our lives we become unstoppable. Push and pull forces especially are always there once established. They are superpowers we all have. We just need to be aware of them and when we understand how they work, forget the sky, the universe is the limit.
