Work On Yourself, Worry Less About Everyone Else
Personal development. Your key to living the life you want and making changes in the world you would like to see are inextricably linked to your commitment to your personal growth. And the good news is there isn't a single human among the seven and a half billion on this planet that does not have significant room growth.
Think for a moment of everyone that is in a profession of influence. Teachers, politicians, law enforcement personnel, and even the clergy produce the most shock and awe when we read or hear about their short comings. Why? Because they are held to a different standard in our minds because of their titles. But the reality is we are all human thus we are all flawed and susceptible to many different vices. This is not a piece to excuse of condone behaviors that are detrimental to conduciveness in our society but more so an attempt to illustrate that the single best thing anyone of us can do both for ourselves and society is to be committed to our personal growth and development day in and day out.
Bringing about change in ones life is very difficult. Even those that are aware of the mechanisms of habit, mindsets, prediction loops, neural plasticity, the power of adaptive unconscious processes, situational and social influence fall short of making the changes they want for themselves in their lives. Education doesn't even equate to being able to do this. There are plenty of healthcare professionals that don't follow the advice they dispense to their patients. There are plenty of law enforcement personnel that routinely fracture laws. Research shows that few people ever reach the stage of wanting a self transformation and even fewer reach self actualization.
One rule that is constant that very few of us break is the law of social influence. It is possible to overcome it but so very few do. We are influenced by the people we surround ourselves with. If you start to work diligently on your personal growth you will start to be more selective of those you surround yourself with aiding your process.
Being the best version of the person you can be is not an easy thing for many of us. It is even more difficult to practice this in difficult times. But the rewards we reap for ourselves and the value we create for others is immeasurable.
I have been on this journey of personal growth for the past four years. Each day I strive to improve and grow just a little more than the day before. I seldom if ever tell others how to be or what to do. The positive social influence I have had on others by simply working to improve myself has been far greater during this period than at any other time in my life when I would 'preach' to others about what's best for them. People follow actions and behaviors and when those around you see you are committed to improving yourself, you will have a far more reaching influence of having that rub off on others than being judgmental or critical of others.
